THE ITALIAN ENGLISH SETTER MORPHOLOGICAL STANDARD. You are in our most important page where we present the italian breed standard. We can not explain all details to avoid mistakes in this translation from Italian into English, so we prefer to use a summary short but correct. Our standard's authors (Caielli, Solaro e Colombo) described every anatomical regions and in particular they fixed dimensions (height, width, angles, ratios) of each parts (head, shoulders, forelegs, hindlegs, etc.) with reference to hunting work.

The images, shown in the following standard, are published in Mr. De Cillis's book "I setter" that was wrote with our cooperation.

    Head:
Carried high, long and reasonably lean. Size and proportion in harmony with body (4/10 of withers). When viewed from the side, head planes (top of muzzle, top of skull and bottom of lower jaw) are parallel. Length of skull from occiput to stop equal in length of muzzle.

    Nose:
Colour os nose black or dark liver, according to colour of coat. It must be big, wide, damp and bright. It is on the same plane of muzzle.

    Muzzle and lips:
Muzzle should be long and square, from stop to point of nose should be equal to length of skull from occioput to eyes. It must be straight from eyes to tip of the nose. Foreface-skeletal structure under the eyes well chiseled with thin skin. The lips should cover just jaws and they are not pendulous.

    Jaws:
Jaws strong and of nearly equal lenght, with a perfect, regular and comlete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Full dentition is necessary.

    Stop:
    Well defined.

    Skull:
Oval from ear to ear, showing plenty of brain room, occipital protuberance well defined.

    Ears:
Ears should be set low (at least level with the eye), of moderate lenght (two thirds of lenght of head) lightly rounded at the bottom, and hanging in neat folds close to cheek, tip velvety, upper part clothed in fine silky hair.

    Eyes:
Bright. mild and expressive. Colour ranging between hazel and dark brown, the darker the better. In liver beltons only, a lighter eye is acceptable. Eyes oval and not protruding. Eyelid rims dark or brown and fully pigmented.

    Neck
The neck should be long like the head, so the fourth part of withers. It should be slightly arched at crest and clean cut where it joins head; towards shoulders is larger and very muscular, never throaty nor pendulous below throat, but elegant in apparance.

    Body:
The body should be of moderate length. Measuring from the tip of the shoulder to the tip of the breech, the lenght should be greater than the height at the top of shoulder for 1/20 - 1/18. The body designs a rectangle.

    Chest:
Muscular, deep in brisket, very good depth and width between shoulder blades. Ribs good round, widely sprung and deep in back ribs, i.e. well ribbed up.

    Back:
The back line should be a gradual slope from the shoulder, being the highest point, to the root of the tail. Its outline is straight. Its length is in proportion to depth chest. (the italian authors indicated ratios and measures for depth, width and length)

    Loin:
When viewed from the side, it should be arched. Short (at least one fifth of the height at the top of shoulder), wide (at least equal to its length) and muscular.

    Rump:
Wide, muscular, sloping 10° above the horizon. Its length is about one third of the height at the top of shoulder and its width is about one seventh of the height at the top of shoulder.

    Tail:
Set in line with back, big near the root and taper to a fine point, medium length, neither curly nor ropy, slightly curved or scimitar-shaped but with no tendency to turn upwards, carried in a plane not higher than the level of back. Flag or feathers hanging in long pendant flakes; feather commencing slightly below the root 8 (after 2 o 3 cm), and increasing in length towards middle, then gradually tapering towards the end. Hair long, bright, soft and silky, lightly wavy but not curly

    Genitals:
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

    Forelegs

    Viewed from the side:
    1) The vertical line from scapula-humerus joint (tip shoulder) should touch the tip toes.

    2) The pasterns should be short, strong and nearly round with the slope from the pastern joint to the foot deviating very slightly forward from the perpendicular. (the italian authors indicated ratios and measures)

    Viewed from the front:
The front legs should drop absolutely straight and parallel to each other to the pasterns and still viewed from the front the pasterns and feet should still be in the same straight line. The length from foot to the elbow is less than the length from the elbow to the top of shoulder due to the forearm which is more short than the arm. The length of the bones and the chest depth should be so proportioned that the bottom of the chest should be in line with (or lower than) the elbow

    Shoulder:
Its length is one fourth of the height at the top of shoulder; it should be sloped 45°-55° above the horizon, muscular and free. The scapulae are curved in a laterl plane so that the two when they nearly meat at the top of the shoulder should be close together so that one or two fingers only can be placed between them when the dog is standing with his head up.

    Arm:
Very muscular with rounded bone. It sloped about 65° above the horizon and the length (higher than forearm) is 33% of the height at the top of shoulder.

    Forearm:
Straight with rounded bone; its cross section is oval; its length is less than the arm, If the height at the top of shoulder is 60 cm. the distance between the elbow and the foot is 28,5 cm. Elbows should have no tendency to turn either in or out.

    Pastern:
Viewed from the front it should be in the vertical line.

    Foot:
Well padded, tight, with close well arched toes protected by hair between them. Sole-feet must be hard with arched nails with pigmentation.

    Hindlegs :

    Viewed from the side:
1)The vertical line from tip buttock should touch the tip toes. The pastern joint should be perpendicular.

    Viewed from the rear:
2)It should be in a vertical line dropped from the rear of the buttocks to hocks.

    Thighs:
Wide, long, muscular and oblique from up to bottom, from back foward (75%). Its length should be one third (or more) of the height at the top of shoulder. The two thighs must be parallel lines.

    Hock:
Viewed from the rear, it should be wide, Its length must be equal to 27% of the height at the top of shoulder. It should be on the vertical line dropped from tip buttock.

    Metatarsus:
The metatarsus must be vertical position and its length is 16,50 cm if size dog is 60 cm. It should be sturdy, thin without spur. Viewed from the side, it should be behind the vertical line dropped from tip buttock.

    Coat:
From back of head in line with ears slightly wavy, not curly, long and silky, as is coat generally, breeches and forelegs nearly down to feet well feathered.
